Gooch & Housego a global optical component and systems manufacturer provides optical solutions to many of its customers’ and its delighted to have been directly involved with the successful research programme for Ricardo’s ‘Spray Guided Direct Injection combustion system’ (SGDI).
Gooch & Housego’s Precision Optics Product Manager, Alistair Heppell, helped design the full length quartz liner, quartz piston crown with valve seats and the unique Zerodur piston base. G&H also advised on the profile of the glass liner to aid the manufacture. Below Fig 1 shows the glass piston and Fig 2 shows the piston positioned inside the SGDI.

Jason King, Chief Engineer in the Engines Group at Ricardo explains more about the partnership with G&H and the project:
 
“G&H have been involved in working with Ricardo on their Spray Guided Direct Injection engine research programme. Ricardo has been working for 3 years in developing the next generation of ultra efficient gasoline engine combustion system for flex fuel operation – this will take us to 2025 and beyond.  The optical engine, which is probably the most advanced of its kind in the world, is a key part of that develop process. Here G&H have been highly involved in both assisting with the design and manufacturing of the critical and most challenging optical specific engine parts including a full length quartz liner, quartz piston crown and unique Zerodur piston. The optical engine can be either motored or fired like a conventional engine, running up to speed of 2000 rpm and close to full engine load. The optical engine is used to examine critical in-cylinder events such as the fuel injection process and combustion using high speed photography and advanced non-intrusive laser based measurements”.
